Some very knowledgable scientists have looked at the fish that is in the hobby as Chapalichthys sp. "la Mintzita". They have determined that it is not a Chapalichthys at all! I have been told that we should be calling this fish 'Xenotoca variata' from la Mintzita. The ticks around Xenotoca variata are to indicate that there are certain differences betweeen this fish and Xenotoca variata from outside the Cuitzeo basin. These differences might be addressed in the future.
Thanks Joel! I did not know that. I was also told that this fish was Chapalichthys peraticus. Is this ture? I geuss you can say, This is way we CARE. LOL!
Hi Joel, I presently have the Chapalichthys sp., La Minitzita. I am curious as to your source of the person(s) who state that the species is actually a X. variata. Thanks! Ben Slocum

Thanks Joel for providing me more information, however I'll ask you to go a step further. I googled Dr. Dominguez and found little or no information. Does he publish any of his findings? I'd like to see more of his findings. Thanks Sir, Ben

Omar is probably the leading authority on goodeid classification right now. He is the head of the Fish Ark Project that Ivan Dibble started a few years back. He is at the University in Morelia.
Instead of using Google, use Google Scholar. I think you will find that Omar is extremely prolific at publishing his work.
Give him a couple of years on the "Xenotoca variata" from the Cuitzeo basin. He has a lot of irons in the fire.
