Facilitating the establishment of territories... not exactly news to fishkeepers.

I do like to see controlled studies and publications covering fish care and welfare, however. Especially when I see statements like this:

Oldfield is not trying to support any extreme agendas. "I'm not trying to ban human use of animals – I just think that if we are going to interact with them then we should be as informed as possible."

I suppose with 182.9 million pet fish in the US, they're finally demanding some attention.

Aquarium fishes are more aggressive in reduced environments, a new study finds

It's an interesting result but as a scientist Oldfield ought to know better than to extrapolate to all captive fish results based up a single cichlid species.

Basing a conclusion on a sample size of one is a dangerous scientific practice that can lead the uninformed to jump to false conclusion. It is particularly worrisome when San Francisco has considered banning aquarium fish largely prompted by reasons based on fallacies.

The study is only valid for Amphilophus citrinellus. It cannot be assumed to apply to other species and especially to other genera until more data is collected and analyzed in the same way.

This is not news to anyone that has ever kept any aggressive or territorial fish. If you keep some tomato clowns in a 50 gallon tank they will kill each other over the tank. This is also true for most carnivorous predatory fish (i.e. oscars).

Let us be aware that not all people love their fish as only a fishaholic can. We do all we can to give our fish the enviroment they need to be happy and produce babies.
What I read into his study is he wants to learn what it would take to keep our growing human population happy.

All is good in the world of my small fish room Don
