Daphnia pulex, commonly cultured for live food by fishkeepers, is the first crustacean to have its genome sequenced.

The surprising discovery that the genome of Daphnia contains neurotrophins, indicates a more complex nervous system in crustaceans than previously thought. This may explain their sensitivity to oxygen levels, environmental instability, & toxins (such as the preservative ethoxyquin).
