Hello.
I am very new to fish care and I have a few questions I hope you all can help me with.
I've just started up 6 different 10 gallon tanks. 5 of these tanks contain 2 platyfish each and 1 of the tanks contain 2 swordtails. I added my chlorine remover and some salt to all the tanks 2 days before I added any fish and after I added the fish I began doing 25% water changes every day and I added a 'biological additive' to speed up the nitrogen cycle.
So one problem is that both my swordtails (and their 2 replacements - 1 of which went into a different tank - so I don't think the tank is the problem) died.
The other problem is that my nitrite levels continue to be way too high.
Does anyone know why my swordtails are dying when my platys are not?
Also can anyone give me advice on why my nitrite levels are staying so high and how to get them down?
Thanks very much for any help you guys can give me!!!
Gwendolyn

I think the best solution is often the easiest one to do. Do a few extra water changes. It's really hard to say why the one fish died without actually seeing the fish in question and knowing the water parameters and how it was acclimated.
