All of my goodeid tanks are upstairs in our living room and I am sure in the winter we will have our heat on. I was wondering what you guys would suggest to keep the tanks cool during the winter? What do you guys do for your tanks during the seasons? Thank you very much! Take care!
Chris

I run my goodeid tanks with no heaters. The fish adapt readily to the room temperatures that we find comfortable. Since I am a cheap SOB, my home only gets heated to about 68F or a bit more in winter, so the goodeids love it. The tough time for mine is summer because I do not make my home cold enough to make them happy very often. That is when I must give the goodeids special attention. My fish room gets a wide open air duct for the air conditioner to cool that room a bit more than the rest of the house. It is about all I can do for them.

Thank you very much Gordon! I will just unplug my heaters and let them get to room temperature. I thought of that I just didn't know if anyone did anything special. In my house I am more worried about winter then summer because I know my wife will want to keep the house very warm. She gets cold very easily. I will see if we can negotiate and make a peace pact lol and keep the house at a certain temperature. Like low 70's or so. Thanks again!

Hi chris

Yes There are few populations of X.captivus

this is the way i keep my goodeids

1/ goodeids are best kept in large tanks. it is best not to keep them in any tank smaller than 24”x12”x12”

2/ try not to keep to many goodeids in a singal tank many of them will fight if not giving the space

3/ most goodeids need plenty of live foods in there diet

4/ most do well with a 40%-50% weekly water chang,
5/ some goodeids can hybridise it is best not to mix any of the goodeid family

Feeding
i feed a cheep flake food once 0r twice a week
they need plenty of live foods in there diet to get them in good breeding condition. If fed too much food. fry can get big and some times the fry can come out deformed. there may be many reasons for a female to die after giving birth. As for big fry killing the female. i think it’s a myth most goodeids have big fry

live foods.
i feed to my fish are brineshrimp. Micro worm. white worm. grindal worm.
earth worm. And fruit fly's. all these live foods can be fed throughout the year.
in the summer months I collect and feedmy fish (water fleas daphnia ) mosquito larve. and blood worm.
When feeding live foods you must give them a variety of live food do not feed the same food every day
frozen food
i feed them blood worm (water fleas ) and prawns

Temperatures/.
Tank Temperature is inporant some like it warm and some don’t
If you keep them at a constant temperature it can make them go sterile. when kept to high a Temperature many of them will suffer and end up dieing it is best to lower temperatures during the winter this in turn will help to build up there strength and gives the females a rest from breeding in the wild the water Temperature fluctuates all the time and thets how I keep all of my goodeids in the winter Temperature fluctuations are bottom row of tanks very from 60f- 64f and middle to top row of tanks up to 68f .and summer time Temperature 68f- 72f

Thank you very much fish48! All of my fish are kept in either a tank of 24"12"12 or more. All of my fish are also in their own specie tanks. I will for sure do water changes weekly. I have noticed that the fish seem to perk right up when a water change is done. My temperatures right now are around 68-72 but I will for sure unplug the heater and let them get lower in temperature. I also have a great variety of foods for them as well. I have bloodworms, brine shrimp, spirlinua brine shrimp, emerald variety, tropical fish flakes, and veggie flakes. I have been feeding them different foods each day. Thank you very much!
