Our family has a 37 gallon tank used for livebearers- we have had the tank for only six months and have already had plenty of fun breeding platys and mollies. We have had great success using aquarium salt at the standard doses to keep the fish happy. The question is- what kind of scavengers (plecos, cat fish, etc.) can tolerate the salt? We have read that none of them tolerate salt. Is that true?
How much salt ayou using? Despite what some publications say, Platies really don't require salt in their water and by using it you can actually weaking them.
Thank you for all your responses. We have read that plecos do not tolerate any salt. However, your experience with cory's and plecos sound good. We will definitely look further into all the ideas given with this post
I, too used to add salt to my Platy & Swordtail tanks, but later learned that by raising the Fish (which yes, they were healthy and showed no "problems"), that this weakens their immume system. After learning this, I only used salt to help cure ill fish and added no salt to my stock tanks.
I'm not saying that's what everyone should do, but it helps when the fish are moved to someone else's tanks.
As long as we are on that subject, it seems like mollies, in general, like the salt but other livebearers like platies, swordtails, and guppies do not. Is that a fair statement?
As far as guppies go, I personally don't add salt to my tank. However, I have heard that some people do put some salt in their guppy tanks, so I'm not sure if they like the salt water.
