Maybe a strange question, but do I need to have a special filter (sponge filter?) in a 55 gallon I am setting up that wont suck up all the fry?

Preferably, yes, You can also cover the uptake tube of mechanical filters with an Aquaclear sponge (cut an X all the way through the center and then slip it over the tube).

You'll probably still have survivors if you don't do anything special.

Ok, thanks!
You've been answering all of my questions!

I want to get an emperor 400 cause they are on sale right now, so I'll try the aquaclear sponge with it.

Is there a general overview page on this website that covers tank setup and tips specifically for livebearers that i missed?

Not yet, but we're hoping to at least have a collection of articles available soon. The Livebearers Journal often has invaluable species-specific details about captive set-ups and wild habitats.

I use sponge filters for all my fish tanks and do the same with my fry tanks. As for HOB filters I do exactly what Melody suggested, I wrap a sponge over intake tube that drops into the tank. Then you get a sort of double filtration a) through the sponge then b) through the rest of the mechanical filter.

I mostly use HOB filters and haven't noticed any losses. The Xiphophorus couchianus fry are tiny, maybe 3/16 in. and they seem able to stay away from the tubes. Having said that, I think the idea of a sponge over the intake is probably a great idea.
