New here having found this site on the Planted Tank Forum. I was looking for goodeid info so I could take part in the conservation efforts...
I was able to connect with a member here to find a goodeid species a newcomer could start with. He also pointe me toward some great informational sites. What I've kept until now are heavily planted tanks, freshwater shrimp, and community fish.
I hope to someday keep Characodon audax-toboso once I get my feet wet (!) and I know it'll take a while to find them so I have plenty of time to get my goodeid skills up to par when I finally do locate some.
Forums have been slow but many here should be able to help. I am not sure who you contacted on info so far but there is a member "Joel Healy" that is very knowledgeable about goodieds. I keep a couple types myself that I got from him and am in the process of getting set up to get some more.
Many thanks for the welcome! It was Thriftyfisher here who has been so helpful to me. I'm even 'stepping out' to attend the local Aquarium Society meeting here, first time ever. Very excited to begin this project!
OK, all of you who would love to get your hands on some Characodons, why not sign up and attend the 2012 convention? I have been to the last several conventions and the auction held on the last day is a treasure trove of wild type goodeids. I brought home some nice Characodon lateralis with location information last year, along with the C. encaustus that were one of the SMP offerings. The convention is in Fort Lauderdale this year and well worth considering if you can get away the last weekend in April. I will be there along with a lot of other convention regulars. I suspect we are just the worst bunch when it comes to wanting only the best available livebearers.
