I've very confused about this fishes Genetics. I've been searching and taken a lot of time online websites and I'm having difficulty identifying this fish. At first when I was told this fish was a Skiffia Multipunctata I thought these black spots identified that these are males. Eventually when it started getting big I just folded and decided it had to be a female despite what I was told what type of fish these were.

So far all I can confidently say is I'm pretty sure that the male is a Skiffia based on how the top fin looks similar to the following link picture of Skiffia Lermea However, beginning of the fin is not spiky at all just lower then the rest of the rays and the coloring is quite different then anything I've searched online. There is a tint of see through blue on the top fin and only recently is it starting to get some light yellowing on the tail fin. Now that the male is gainning more color I can't figure out what Skiffia it is.

I'm showing you a picture of while she is pregnant. I wish I could get some better pictures. I'm also confident that this is a females on the goodieds family.

I really don't know how to work the camera all that well, but I guess once I barrow it from whatever family member has it now I'll get some pictures of the male. Hopefully it will come out better then this one (which is my best one out of a ton of pictures I got) btw, Ignore the little algae it is gone currently.

You definitely have a Skiffia female in the photo. I would guess that you have a multipunctata but would need to see your male. The reason I say it is a multipunctata not a lermae is the spots down the side of your fish.

The photo below shows what my rather unattractive males looked like when I had them. Many strains have black on them. Some of them even have a lot of black on them.

More information can be found on www.goodeiden.de. There is a good description of the male Andropodium on the site here http://goodeiden.de/html/goodeids.html which should help you sex Goodeids in the future.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Patrick you always help tons!

Yeah I don't think my male is more attractive then yours and to me yours is pretty attractive imo.

Thanks for the links to Goodeids Website again. Very informative and helpful. I found the Andropodium, took a little more observation then I thought.

I have forty plus fry and I may have females that recently gave birth pregnant again before the mating season ends.

+1 to the Skiffia. She looks like H. formosa but at almost 2 inches she is definitely Skiffia.

Here is a photo of my friend Curt's fish. This was one that he showed at the ALA convention this year. His males look really nice and get really big.

Is that a male Skiffia Multipunctata?

My male never got any black on him so far during this mating season. One reason why I'm thinking what I got aren't Skiffia Multipunctata however they are less then a year old so it may too young to get black during mating season. I'm really not sure.

As you stated Patrick my fish definitely look like a Skiffia Multipunctata variant.
