I purchased 2 pairs of these as "Poeciliopsis Prolifica" but they obviously are not. They are about 2 inches and both sexes have gold spangled scales all over the body and 2-3 vivid black stripes along the center of the body and a gold dotsal spot. Anyone know what they could be?

I love mystery fish! Where did you buy it, online, local store or at a club auction/swap?

Except for the size, I would guess that it looks like Limia sulphurophila. That is just a guess. I know it is difficult with these fish as they tend to be pretty fast and jumpy but a better picture would help.

Good luck. I do have some Poeciliopsis prolifica and they are cool little fish. Unfortunately, they have been very slow to reproduce in my fishroom. I think a change of tank is needed.

I got them from Don Holtgrieve, he got them way back online. Never realized they werent Prolifica. Im pretty sure they are molly but could possibly be a Limia I also have Limia Sulphurophila and these arent them the only Limia I know of that have the gold speckles is Caymanensis which I also have and these are still different.

Have a look at P. caucana and see if you get a match. My own do not exhibit a strong striping pattern but the picture you present also does not present that pattern.

They are Poecilia Chica. I searched for photos of every poecilia species listed on Wikipedia and came across this photo and thats what the female looks exactly like dark with some gold feckles and a black stripe that looks airbrushed on.
