Earl's been out of pocket, so I thought I'd toot his horn.

He BAPed Skiffia francesae and took over the lead in total points in the Oklahoma Aquarium Association's Breeder's Award Program! an 80 point fish!

Congrats Earl!

Congrats on the new breeding Earl. Any time you can breed something as rare as that fish is a good day for the hobby. One day we may not need to worry about this fish quite as much as we did last spring. Nice job.

The hard part with the fish is not breeding, per se, it's th eother issues that are incumbant with captive populations and the environment of this fish. It's a tough one, but not the toughest of the goodeids, but it is somehwat demanding.

Earl should try Hubbsinia turneri for an even more interesting fish...though he's had experience with other ones of similar nature with his diverse breeding experience. And we need that one spread more in the hobby, too.

Dear FishFolk,

Thanks Betty. I've held onto the BAP lead for over a week now. I think Gerald had some target species he was going to BAP in September.

I'd like to try some other interesting livebearers but don't have space. I looked for Skiffia francesae for two years before getting some. Another ALA member in the OKAA club has bred Skiffia francesae, Kyle (aka snakeskinner).

Has anyone else breeding these fish noticed a swim bladder disorder among the young.

Best wishes,

Earl

I would be doing the BAP if they changed the requirements a bit. The one I get stuck on the requirement that you must auction off at least 6 fry in the Vern Parish auction at the convention. The next convention is in Detroit and I might not be able to go since I live so far south. Anyway CONGRATS!!!!!! Earl!!!!!!!!

Or you can write an article on the fish; or submit usable photographs/digital photo's. I have the same problem, being in California when the next convention comes around, though I may attend.

Earl, here is a quote from Hammer that I received a while back:

Very young females often give birth to a few abnormal young due to our overly rich diets and the young being crowded in the ovary. It's been true since the original wild stock. Most commonly you'll see "star-gazers" - babies that often have one eye slightly smaller and incline to one side while swimming. They seem healthy otherwise and will grow up and even breed. We had them checked for pathogens and even tried breeding them but found no apparent genetic nor pathological problem???

I don't know whether this is what you might be experiencing. I have had one male with this condition, but other than swimming at an angle he seems to have developed normally.

I live in El Paso, Texas. I went to the Indianapolis convention but the next one is too far from now to put on a calendar. It took 2 days to drive up and 2 days to drive back.
