I am interested in Poeciliopsis. I have been looking at my aqualog books, reading TFH articles looking around online and reading anything that I can find in my old aquarium books. I was wondering if anyone here would be will to share some experences with the genus, tank sizes that have worked, different species they have kept over time, which species are in the US. I look forward to reading any replys, thank you.
The Poeciliopsis are an easy genus to work with; unfortunately there are not that many species available from the genus.
They are easy keepers and can be kept in community tanks. Or species tanks of 10 gallon size or so; sometimes smaller. They like clean water, food, and can breed quite well.
Take a chance on the ones available. There is enough common literature on them with other people's experiences; and the ALA has a number of species 'running around' in it.
Hi James! I've never kept Poeciliopsis myself, but I found a great article on Poeciliopsis gracilis (the Porthole livebearer) In Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine(October 2007)written by Ted Coletti in his column"livebearers Unlimited".I'm a fan of Teds column and never miss an issue.
Thanks everyone I have a bid on some on aquabid so wish me luck. Copper--I think that I have that article in my TFH box I will look through and see what I can come up with.
I was lucky enough to spend thursday working with Arizona Game and Fish restocking some Gila Topminnows.
I will be putting together an article about the trip for TFH with some pictures from the trip. I hope that they publish it.
I did, I will be the happy owner of three reverse trio of Poeciliopsis prolifica. I hope that they will do well for me and that some day I can get some of the other species as well.
I would love to go do a collecting trip south of the border. I would really need to read up and take my Freshwater Fishes of Mexico with me.
If anyone here is planning a trip south let me know and I might try to tag a long. I would really like to go do some collecting with someone who knows the tricks and can speak spanish.
