This is terrible news. I never met Ivan Dibble, but I have the utmost respect for his work. This is a big loss.

X malinche sword development

I have some Xiphophorus malinche that are closing in on one year of age. They are three survivor fry from a group I bought in which the adults died out right after I got them.
They have sexed out, and I have what I hope is an early stages gravid female. My male is swordless. I know this is a short sword species, but is there any history of swordless males in the species? Or is my guy the slowest bloomer in the Xiphophorus family?

Thanks everyone. I've never combined species from fear of hybridization. I always figured if you were going for a new Goodeid, you were going for a new tank.
Then I realized that what a rule for me might not stand up to the experiences of others. I'm always glad to be right, but I'm gladder to know why I'm right, especially with something I haven't experimented with.

Goodeids in multi-species tanks

I've been asked a question I can't answer, and I know someone here can (and probably has a million times). I've always kept my Goodeids in species tanks, however, an acquaintance needs to know if different genera can be combined in large (40 gallon plus) tanks.

Hi,
I have two pairs of M picta red that I got via Germany. I now have three age groupings of fry, but none have any red. At what age should they show colour? I see some gonopodiums starting on the larger batch of young, but only a few very faint gray marks on their flanks.
Would they colour faster away from the dominant adult males?

I figure I should come in here. My name is Gary and I live close to Montreal. I got mollies and guppies when I was 8, and almost 40 years later, I decided to get them again. I've kept fish for the entire 42 years though -- cichlids and killies mostly. I'm into wild-types in my 60 tank livebearer and killie set-up.

I'll go out on a limb and suggest the tank is too small. I wouldn't try a fish like that in a tank where it couldn't move, and I believe that if you cut into the behavioral possibilities offered to a species, you can affect their breeding.
For a pair, I'd use a minimum 20 gallon long, or bigger.

OldMan has them in harder water - mine are breeding like roaches in pH 6.6, 40ppm tapwater. The temperature ranges from 18-23 celsius.
They are very adaptable.

Does anyone have a subject index to the last two or three years of articles, just to give a new member an overview? I'd be happy to write, but I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

An ongoing index would be an interesting addition to the web-site, given how attractive Livebearers is for people considering joining.

When I look at Livebearers and consider what I've missed by taking so long to join, it is frustrating. Yeah, I deserve to suffer to for not joining sooner, but that's life.
