For my goodeids, I simply place the fish in a tank, feed them well, do a few water changes and sell all of the adults at least once a year. That holds the population down to merely crowded in most tanks. For the more common, and harder to breed by the way, livebearers, I use the birthing tank that Mel said could work. By moving the female about a week to 10 days before I expect a drop, the female has time to settle in and relax and with a very little cover the result can look like this on day 1 of the drop.Open in new window

A few weeks later that same tank can look like this, with only daily feeding and a few water changes as care for the fry.

Bye then.
I find that a much more prolific fish than the average livebearer is convict cichlids. Their fry are just as tasty to a predator and they produce hundreds at a time at 10 or 12 day intervals as long as you remove the fry they are caring for.

Have you considered joining ALA and posting your desires in the Livebearer Trader? It is published several times each year with for sale ads and wanted ads. Many of us are also quite open to trading.

You really are looking for 2009 pictures?

I just sent a few pictures from this year's convention.

Try merely removing or unplugging the heater in goodeid tanks. Most goodeids are quite comfortable, and maybe even a bit too warm, in the temperatures we find comfortable in our homes. The variation of temperatures with the time of day and the season is something that is more natural than what we often would do with a true tropical fish that never sees its temperatures change. Goodeids are better off with that temperature variation to remind them of seasons and "natural" conditions.

I run my goodeid tanks with no heaters. The fish adapt readily to the room temperatures that we find comfortable. Since I am a cheap SOB, my home only gets heated to about 68F or a bit more in winter, so the goodeids love it. The tough time for mine is summer because I do not make my home cold enough to make them happy very often. That is when I must give the goodeids special attention. My fish room gets a wide open air duct for the air conditioner to cool that room a bit more than the rest of the house. It is about all I can do for them.

You had better watch out when dealing with Melody Strikeris. She is one of those people who really does know what she is talking about when it comes to fish foods. LisaChromis is no slouch in that department either. They both hang out in a very nice forum where feeding fish properly is a significant topic. I am a member there too. Have a look here for tons of good information.

This one will be 3 in a row for me. I joined ALA around the time of the convention in Texas and just couldn't make that one, but I haven't missed one since. They are a good time for all.

It is a bit early to be looking for the convention site yet. The next one is in Cleveland and will be earlier than this year but I am not sure who the host club is.

I have never tried a wading pool but have had good results placing my fish outdoors for the summer in a tub. I bought what was advertised as a 150 gallon stock tank and simply rinsed it out and filled it with dechlorinated water. I keep mine in a shady location because the summers get so darned hot around here. As a filter, I use a fountain pump that came with a sponge filter on the inlet side to keep leaves out of the pump. It also works fine as a biological filter. I even bring it in during the winter and use it with a power head in one of my tanks so that it stays cycled.
Tub with fountain running.
