Re: Curious about collecting in North Carolina |

Before you start collecting, make sure you know not only the fishing laws but how they are interpreted in your state. Where I live there are seasons and limits for "game fish" fishing. No other fish are addressed at all in the statutes, but all fish not listed as game fish are interpreted by our enforcement people as being protected from all fishing. That means that you simply cannot collect anything here without risking arrest for poaching. The next state over, about 100 miles away for me, allows collecting of anything except game fish as long as you have a fishing license whether resident or non-resident. There is nothing in either set of published fishing guides that alerts you to the different interpretations. You have to either know or ask someone who knows. In my case, our local club president is a NANFA member and has been able to obtain those interpretations from the two states. I suspect your waters are a bit too far north and thus too cool to collect many mollies, but there are plenty of other interesting fish in wild waters.

One characteristic of late developing males in wild type swordtails is that the males are a lot heavier bodied and far more robust looking than their early developing brothers. The longest I have seen was 2 years for a male to show his stuff. I bought 6 young swordtails, X. helleri,at an ALA convention (my guess is they were about 6 months old) and 2 years later had 6 gorgeous males that sold well at another ALA convention. I had no use for all males, but apparently someone did have.

I expect to bring some X. captivus - Jesus Maria and maybe some Characodon sp. - Guadalope Agualera (formerly called Characodon lateralis).

Welcome back to the fold Steve. I notice that you are listed as an ALA member. Will I see you at this year's convention in Grand Rapids?

I am not ready to ever argue with Platymef, Daryl Mefford, about Xiphophorus genetics. I would bet he could write a book on the subject. If he says that swordtail/platy crosses always show a sword, they do.

Welcome Jackd. Do you belong to MASI, the Missouri aquatic society? The club president there, Mike Hellweg, is a frequent contributor to Tropical Fish Hobbyist and a long term member of the ALA. He is speaking this year at the ALA convention and spoke at the ALA Indianapolis convention just a few years ago.
Your skiffia require cool water temperatures, which I did not understand fully the last time I tried to keep some. I lost mine by not having tank temperatures that were cool enough for them.
Mosquito fish include several species. Which of them are you working with? Many must be isolated to a single species tank since they will decimate any other species that are kept with them.

Post pictures using a place like photobucket instead. That way the limits of this site will be ignored and the limits of places like photobucket will be limiting instead. It is how I post all pictures in all forums.

Breedermuuu: be sure to pay attention to any response you get from people like platymef, Darrel Mefford. He is a long term great fancy swordtail and platy breeder with superb knowledge of xiphophorus genetics at the absolute most practical level. Many of us can help you with the basics but he is a true fancy fish breeding expert. In general, I find that Xiphophorus fry do well if the adults in their tank are well fed and the fry have good cover for hiding. After a few weeks following a drop, even the heavy cover is not really needed. The fry will do well on their own. Mel's caution is necessary since the size of drops often exceeds our ability to care for the fry as they grow. Gerard is correct that often the best we can do with the huge Xiphophorus drops is to insure that the adults are very well fed.

Definitely. The more that you reveal about your fry, the more likely you will attract a bidder with a real interest in your fry. That bidder is the one that will run up the price for you. Generic fry draw almost no bids at an auction because people think of them as not much more than food for their existing populations of fish. If you can give them a hint of their potential value, you will get much better bids instead.

Jump in Joefish. I used the on line hotel reservation along with the ALA code to register at the hotel. The convention registration meant filling in a PDF document and using snail mail, at least when I did it. I wish there had been a way to use Paypal and do the registration electronically but unfortunately that was not an available option. I have used such an approach for the last several conventions and definitely preferred it that way.
