I have also seen these dwarf platys in the lfs but do not know much about them. Im sure they are a product of an asian breeder and most of the time these breeders do not give up their secrets. Many of the new platys and swordtails, like the sanshoku, are products of asian breeders and their genetics are left to speculation. The only "bad things" in the fish market are dyed fish and the diseased fish you find at petsmart

Hmmm, I bought some green swordtails not too long ago as fry and they are just now starting to really show there spots. All of mine have spotting but nothing like you are referring too. It almost sounds like a tuxedo pattern you are describing. And to add one thing to chromedomes explanantion of the high fin gene it is also lethal in a double does meaning that any embryo with two sets of high fin genes will not develope; why exactly I still am not sure. Therefore all high fin fish carry one high fin gene and one normal fin gene. I have heard some people talk about producing all high fins from a mating of two high fins but I still have yet too see any actual documented proof.

Lol Earl, the spawn of satan huh. Poor little buggers never get recognized for their cute little pointy shells and their adorable shy personalitys. It must be hard being a MTS.

I think once they associate your presence with food they will start coming out more often when you enter the room. It is amazing how far a little food can get you.

Did we wake up on the wrong side of the bed today Peter Were you reffering to oldmans comment or what NYCguppydude said? If you were to produce 100% males by doing this how would you ever get your future generation without females to breed them too? This is some interesting knowledge that I never knew but it seems like something that a major fish breeder producing fish for wholesalers would do and not a hobbyist. If anything atleast Nic got his questioned answered.

I am on the same page as oldman. Although I have been breeding livebearers for a while I still do not think I am ready to head any departments of the ALA. Maybe this is partly due to lack of confidence but I still feel like I need to learn more before I take any type of title as an officer of the ALA. Until I reach this point I will continue to do all I can to support the ALA and encourage new members to join. I am always willing to help in any way that I can but I still have much to learn.

Regardless of what someone may specialize in or prefer in the fish hobby I think any beautiful fish can be admired and wanted. Although I prefer livebearers, xiphophorus to be exact, I have still been wanting to get some more angel fish and some Sewellia lineolata. As for the posts being considered blatant advertising I avoid this by posting in the correct places. Usually in the livebearers section or in the links section of the forums. A true fish hobbyist would be delighted to allow their forum members to have other resources for information. Whether your posting in the forums, chatting with other hobbyists, providing links or casually dropping references to the ALA while answering other peoples questions any advertising is good advertising. If we could get everyone on here to do these things regularly this site will grow with leaps and bounds over time.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately Chromedome out of the four females I was supposed to get only two of them turned out to be actual females. Now I am left with six males and two females so culling right now is not an option. I have another breeder that is selling me some females only so when I get those, and can verify they are females, I will select the ones with the best coverage. I also plan on crossing the sanshoku to my normal and albino koi . I am hoping I can improve on the strain of sanshoku I have. I have been talking to the breeder that first sold them too the guy I bought these from and he said this strain ended up dieng out in his fish room. He originaly got them as imports and he said they were never that strong. We will see in the next few months to a year what happens.
