"The Animal Rescue League of Boston is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of whoever was responsible for a Fall River pet shop break-in last month that cost the owner his 180-gallon living reef tank — and two dozen exotic fish their lives.

“What we felt was getting missed was the suffering this caused. Fish suffered. This is not right. We will not stand for it. He who would hurt the least among us is a danger to all of us. It was just so wanton, so needless,” Dr. Martha Smith-Blackmore, ARL’s vice president of animal welfare, told the Herald."

There are many animal war heroes, from dogs to pigeons. Now we can add fish to the list.

A University of Bristol team has created artificial muscles that can change color at the flick of a switch, and which could in future be used in 'smart clothing'.

"We have taken inspiration from nature's designs and exploited the same methods to turn our artificial muscles into striking visual effects," says Dr Jonathan Rossiter of the Department of Engineering Mathematics.

The soft, stretchy, artificial muscles are based on specialist, pigment-containing cells called chromatophores that are found in amphibians, fish, reptiles and cephalopods.
