Livebearers Journal #219... [by Editor]

Announcements::Livebearers Journal #219...
...has gone to press! ALA members receive a full-color slick magazine maield to their door in a personalilzed mailing envelope to ensure a clean copy. JOIN TODAY!

----------------------------------------------------

reprinted from Livebearers Journal #219
EDITOR’S TANK
WITH DR. TED COLETTI

This month we fully usher in the “journal” format of Livebearers, which we transitioned to last month in the inaugural issue of this new volume. We hope you enjoy the rich global content, as an enjoyable tool for your hobby. The ALA is starting a new ALA “E-bulletin” system for club news, programs, voting, trading posts, etc. Please see instructions on the opposite page and take action so you don’t miss out.

To kick off our Summer issue, Charles Clapsaddle (TX) addresses a timely topic: how we do conservation. His article reminds me of the tragedies encountered when captive-raised great apes have been returned to the wild. Please feel free to send me a note if you would like your voice heard on this important subject.

Speaking of “the wild,” I’ve heard complaints over the years that the ALA is “all about wild-type livebearers now.” Not true! It’s just that "wild hobbyists” write more than “fancy hobbyists.” The science favors wild types too. So in our effort to include Domestic content in every Livebearers, we offer up a practical gem from Master Swordtail Breeder, Karl Trochu (FL), a memoir from Board member, Gerard Schulz (CA), and a fancy old favorite From the Archives.

We are honored by having an article by “The Pope” of the livebearer hobby, our own James Langhammer (MI). Jim “hammers” home the most comprehensive article on raising daphnia I have ever read, and inspires me to give this a try after my summer tub season. It complements fellow Fellow, Richard Griffiths,’ article last month. Now anyone have thoughts on raising moina? I want to publish it.
From our foreign exchange program, Association France Vivipares reports an exciting discovery of a new Micropeocila. Rumor has it that columnist Mike Hellweg (MO) is on his way to Paris as we speak. Good. That will give me a chance to sneak down to St. Louis and abscond a few of his mattenfilters he writes about this month.

Lastly, our Abstractions column for the next two issues will feature the abstracts from the graduate student posters presented at this year’s ALA Convention in Grand Rapids, MI. As reported in the media, with federal grant money and fellowships slashed dramatically due to the “fiscal cliff” sequestration, much basic biological and medical research is being shelved, and scientists are leaving the labs. It is more important than ever that we support the Vern Parish Fund (VPF). Washington may be short-sighted and stubborn, but ALA members have always been generous with what is important. Consider sending a tax-deductible VPF donation (any size) to alapaypal@livebearers.org today so we can help take up the slack in a small way.

Ted	editor@livebearers.org
Thanks Ted! I'm looking forward to reading it!

Gerard, Yes the ALA was mostly Fancy Fish oriented in the early years, but leaned mostly toward natural wild species (Except for a few strange people like me) after the wilds became available to the membership.

Darrell

I just sent rich an article for publications. After that was written and mailed I wrote another that will go into the next publication. It is really not hard to do just write about what excites you even if it is only a few paragraphs and a few photos.
Later
gerard
