ALA Convention::Convention Hotel Discount
We had heard that some people had missed the deadline of April 4 to get the $89 discount rate for the convention hotel. The convention chair has heard your request and talked the hotel into extending the discount until April 16.

You can make your reservation by clicking this link;

http://www.crowneplaza.com/redirect?p ... randCode=cp&localeCode=en®ionCode=1&hotelCode=GRRCP&_PMID=99801505&GPC=ALA

If you missed the date the first time you will not want to miss it again.

We look forward to seeing everyone there!

ALA Convention::So what is the Gonopodium Galleria?
The $5 is to ensure that you are at the front of the line to be on the floor (we work with the hotel on that) and so that you can advertise at the convention, we will have some type of board to post your list/advertise on that will be limited to those who have paid their $5.

At the time, the last known collection of the fish was in 2004. The fish was declared endangered by John Lyons in his report of 2005. In his list published in 2011, he shows the fish as extinct in the wild. Hence the need to increase stocks in the hobby. We are fortunate to have a club member who has had great success with the fish and is making some young pairs available.

Allotoca goslinei is a goodeid also called the "banded Allotoca." Beginning in 1996, this fish was found almost exclusively in the Rio Potrero Grande, a tributary river of the Rio Ameca in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. One specimen was found in the immediately adjacent Rio Ameca itself so this area should not be overlooked in future collection trips, although success in finding the fish is unlikely. Water temperature in this part of the Mexican uplands rarely rises above 68 degrees which makes Allotoca goslinei a relatively colder water fish. Water depth tends to be 6-12". pH is 7.5-8.5.

Characteristics

This is a stocky fish with a small pointed head. The dorsal fin is set way back on the body. Both males and females can have a dark spot on their flanks, but not all will show this. The fish reaches a size of only 2-2 1/2". Sexual maturity, however, can be reached when it is about half grown (as early as three months.)

Care and Feeding

A pair of these fish will do well in a 20 gallon long tank. They need lots of hiding places. Rounded rocks of various sizes to hide adults and fry can cover the bottom sides and back and there should be an abundance of plants. A predominance of live food is recommended which can include baby brine shrimp, blood worms, HBH Supersoft with Krill and glass worms. Flake food can be offered from time to time. More mature fish can get by on just flake and snails when not breeding during a winter rest. Feed at least two times a day.

Breeding

As previously noted, A. goslinei can tolerate lower temperatures in the native habitat and in garden tubs, but they seem to breed better in higher temperatures in captivity - 72-74F. When the female begins to look nicely rounded, remove her or her tank mates as tankmates can be brutal on fry. A typical spawn from a mature female can be about 30 fry. (An ALA record spawn was 67 from a large and pampered adult.)

A. goslinei does best in multigenerational colonies and will flock breed like other goodeids once a properly balanced community is achieved. This can be achieved by putting successive spawns (after a week or two of feeding in their breeding tank) in a separate, dedicated tank so that, as the fish mature, they become used to co-habiting with young fish.

The breeder of the fish being offered cautions that people may want to think of them as "annual" breeders. Although they can live and breed for several years, he doesn't count on getting more than two drops from any one female. He then looks to younger fish to continue the breeding process.

How to Purchase

The fish will *only* be available via the silent auction at the 2013 convention in Michigan.

For the Record

Once you have the fish established and breeding, please send me a follow-up email to that effect. The measure of success of SMP will be our ability to show that we have significantly increased the number of hobbyists who are breeding extinct and endangered fish. Let me know if you have any questions.

Tom Crane
Species Maintenance Program
American Livebearer Association

Graduate Poster Presentations [by Thriftyfisher]

ALA Convention::Graduate Poster Presentations
Ever wonder what the Graduate Student Poster Session program is? Well, we have posted a summary of it on the ALA2013 website at http://ala2013.com/Other_Sponsorships.html

In addition there is a button so that you can help sponsor a Graduate Student presenter. If you or your local club were looking at sponsoring a show class but have missed out on the opportunity, (all of those sponsorships are now all filled) helping to sponsor the Graduate Students is a great way of helping to support the convention, ALA, and the Graduate Students.

We are looking forward to some great poster presentations.

ALA Convention::2013 ALA Convention
I was at the last Killie convention and have been to a couple other conventions over the years both Killie and Livebearers and others I can tell you from my experance they all have good things and bad things. what one needs to do is say the heck with the bad I am going to enjoy the good and get out of this with all the knowledge I can... if cost is a factor so be it to you but I for one do not think this convention is out of line on it's cost.. hell have you priced putting on a wedding lately I am here to tell you now that is expensive.. I will be participating in all I can and enjoying every minute... just saying my 2 cents worth
