General Discussion:: Care for X.captivus "Jesus Maria"
Hi there Chris. I lost some a few months ago and never did figure out what was wrong. I did my usual when an unknown is harming my fish. I drained over half the water from the tank and refilled with fresh while changing what I was feeding. I don't know what really helped, but the remaining fish recovered and now my tank is full of fry while my Jesus Maria adults are in the summer tub. They have been dropping fry out there too, I have spotted them while feeding the adults.

General Discussion:: Swordtail Anatomy Picutre
There is such a diagram in the Aquariology Series Anatomy of Tropical Fishes section by Howard E. Evans. The books can be in a set or there is also the 'Master Volume - The science of fish health management' (ISBN: 1-56465-105-3). I had the set and then found the Master Volume, which is what I own currently. They are indeed by Tetra Press. In the set, you'd be looking for the volume called 'Aquariology: Fish Anatomy, Physiology, and Nutrition'. The link provides the ISBN information, etc.

You may be able to find it in your library or online through the second hand stores. It's no longer in print. I got a great deal on mine so it's worth a look.

Yes, I don't know how long you've been working with Fancy Livebearers, but until recent years most people (NOT ME) only thought of them as fish that you started the hobby with and then you were suppose to move "UP" to "ADVANCED" fish.

Darrell

Getting Started with Livebearers:: New Tank Problems
I think the best solution is often the easiest one to do. Do a few extra water changes. It's really hard to say why the one fish died without actually seeing the fish in question and knowing the water parameters and how it was acclimated.

General Discussion:: Advice about Goodeids
A simple follow up.
I got 3 pairs of the A toweri at the ALA convention. Now I have a 29 gallon tank full of fry because at least one of my females has dropped fry. Now when I go to feed their tank, I am feeding about 25 to 30 fish. The fry are hard to count but I feed my fish a largely vegetarian diet and so far the A toweri are cooperating and increasing their numbers. I have yet to go through a winter with them where my goodeids go through a cool water environment. Time will tell how well that part of the year goes.

Tim,

It's hot just about everywhere right now!
If you're thinking about culturing Daphnia outside, put the container in partial shade. If you put it in direct sunlight, you're looking at failure.

Darrell

Getting Started with Livebearers:: New To Livebearers
Many of the livebearers common in the hobby do like their water quite hard.The reason they are common in the hobby is because few people have the ultrasoft water that you are working with.

Livebearers appear in almost any environment on earth, even in the oceans, so the right livebearers probably exist for water exactly like yours. Unfortunately, many of us here arrived at livebearer keeping partly by having that hard, high pH water. You could make suitable water for typical livebearers by using calcium carbonate in one of its many forms in the flow path of your filter. A nice average kind of livebearer water for many of the fish we tend to keep would be between 7.2 and 8 on the pH scale with a GH and a KH both over 5 and for some fish over 10.
