The goal of the American Livebearer Association is to gather, organize and disseminate the knowledge of livebearers, to promote fellowship among members, and to further the conservation of species and their natural habitat.
Membership in the ALA is open to any interested club, individual or household on a yearly or multi-year basis, and is non-transferable. Benefits of ALA membership include: our new full-color magazine, Livebearers, shipped to your door, the ability to advertise in The Livebearers Trader, purchase items from the various committees, receive all special publications, receive one of each election ballot issued, and the right to vote and hold an official position - either appointed (committee) or elected (Board of Directors) - in the ALA during the time their membership is in effect.

Species Maintenence Program (SMP):
The ALA actively supports the maintenance of livebearer species that are endangered or extinct in the wild. ALA Members who participate in this program can obtain pairs of rare fish at minimal cost. The SMP fish for the 2011 convention is Chapalichtys encaustus.
Breeder Award Program:
ALA Members who participate in the Breeder Awards Program receive recognition for breeding number of species of fish, ranked by difficulty and family.
Vern Parish Fund:
Vern Parish was a longtime, active and supportive ALA member and the Vern Parish Fund was established in his name to award and encourage student research on livebearers.
